How to Store Firewood Properly for Winter
As the nights draw in and temperatures drop, nothing beats the warmth and comfort of a real log fire. But if your firewood isn’t stored correctly, you risk damp, mouldy logs that won’t burn efficiently. Proper storage is essential to keep your kiln-dried wood in the best condition all winter long. Here’s how to do it right.
1. Choose the Right Location
Firewood should always be stored off the ground and away from damp surfaces. A raised log store, pallets, or even bricks underneath your stack will prevent moisture creeping up from below.
👉 Tip: Aim for a spot that’s sheltered but still has good airflow.
2. Keep Logs Covered, But Let Them Breathe
A waterproof cover or a log store roof is a must for protecting against rain and snow. However, avoid sealing your logs in airtight containers — they need to breathe! Good ventilation helps maintain that all-important low moisture content.
👉 Best option: A log store with open sides and a sloped roof.
3. Stack Logs the Right Way
Stacking logs loosely allows air to circulate and helps them stay dry. Always stack with the cut ends facing outwards — this not only looks neat but also speeds up drying if any moisture is present.
👉 Safety note: Avoid towering stacks that could topple over.
4. Store Close to Where You’ll Use Them
If possible, keep a small, indoor supply near your fireplace or wood-burning stove. Refill it from your main outdoor store as needed, so you always have dry logs ready to go.
5. Rotate Your Stock
Use the oldest logs first. This keeps your supply fresh and ensures you’re always burning wood that’s in perfect condition.
Why It Matters
Proper storage not only keeps your firewood in peak condition but also:
- Improves efficiency and heat output
- Reduces smoke and soot build-up in your chimney
- Saves money by preventing wasted logs
