eCoal Low CO2 Smokeless Coal

DEFRA-approved smokeless fuel for open fires and multi-fuel stoves.

Homefire Ecoal is one of the UK's most popular smokeless fuels — and for good reason. It burns with a warm, visible flame, holds its heat for longer than wood alone, and produces up to 80% less smoke than house coal. If you live in a Smoke Control Area, Ecoal is an approved fuel you can burn legally.

Ecoal is made using crushed olive stones, a by-product of olive oil production. Its distinctive hexagonal shape encourages airflow through the fuel bed, helping it catch reliably and burn steadily without constant attention.

Is it right for your appliance?

Ecoal is suitable for open fires and multi-fuel stoves. If you have a dedicated wood-burning stove (one that says "wood only" or doesn't have an ashpan), Ecoal is not suitable — stick with our kiln-dried logs instead. If you're unsure, check your appliance manual or look for the multi-fuel label.

10kg or 20kg?

The 10kg bag is a good starting point if you haven't tried Ecoal before, or if your fire is occasional use. The 20kg bag works out better value per kilo and suits anyone burning regularly through autumn and winter — it's the one most of our repeat customers go for.

Key facts

• DEFRA-approved — suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas
• Up to 80% less smoke than house coal
• Up to 40% less CO₂ than house coal
• Long, sustained burn — less refuelling than wood
• Visible flame — looks and feels like a proper fire

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place off the ground. The bags are robust but not weatherproof long-term — if you're keeping coal outside, a covered store or shed is ideal. Damp fuel lights poorly and produces more smoke, so it's worth keeping it dry.
